My

cat, Mati

————————

Hi, and welcome to my blog! In this blog, I’m going to try and solve problems and discuss issues and ideas all about the planet, and being eco-friendly. Before we start, here’s a little about me:

Firstly, my name isn’t really Kitty Wilde. That’s just a pen name (or pseudonym, because I like long words). I live with my mum, my dad, and my little brother, and we have a cat called Mati. (I think I can write her real name here because cats don’t care about online safety).

I like drawing, gardening, baking and reading. I am OBSESSED with reading! I also love wildlife and looking after the planet, which is why I’m writing this blog. I hope that you’re passionate about saving the planet too!

‍ HEDGEHOGS!!!!!!!

Sorry if that was a bit too much, but we just saw a hedgehog in our back garden!

Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so it’s very unusual for them to be out in the daylight. We called the local hedgehog sanctuary, and they said to keep an eye on the hedgehog,(who shall now be called Bramble), and take it to the vet if it comes out of our hedge again. We gave it some food and water, which it has helped itself to. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with Bramble, apart from the fact that she’s out in broad daylight.

Here in England, hedgehogs aren’t that rare, but they’re barely seen. here’s a fact file:

Hedgehog

(Erinaceus europaeus)

(Please note: this fact file applies only to the European hedgehog.)

Length: 15-30cm (30cm is about the length of a school ruler.)

Tail: 1-2cm

Average lifespan: 2-3 years (Sad…)

Weight: Up to 2kg

Category: Mammals

Diet: Just about everything! They particularly like beetles and worms.

Appearance: Small, brown, and round, with a furry face, and spines all over it’s back. (SO cute!❤️)

DID YOU KNOW?

Hedgehog spines are actually made of keratin, the substance that makes our hair and fingernails.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Build a log pile. This will attract insects, turning it into a sort of all-you-can-eat buffet for hedgehogs!

  • Build a hedgehog home. By providing safe places for hedgehogs like Bramble to live, you help boost their population. Hooray!

  • Set up a hedgehog feeding station. By giving them food, you provide a much-needed meal. You can buy special hedgehog food online or in garden centres, but make sure that it’s from a reliable source. They’re also fans of cat food.

If you ever see a hedgehog in the daytime, call your local wildlife centre or hedgehog rescue centre. They’ll tell you what to do. If you have any more questions about hedgehogs search on a reliable website such as Wildlife Trust or National Geographic.

Hooray for hedgehogs!🦔

Vocab:

nocturnal= active at night.

keratin= a tough protein that, other than making our hair and fingernails, also makes many other things in the animal world.
